Orthokeratology is a safe, non surgical contact lens procedure to reduce
or eliminate nearsightedness and astigmatism. A series of special rigid
gas permeable contact lenses are fitted in stages to gently reshape the
cornea (front eye surface). A typical program can be completed within six
months. These lenses are designed to be worn during the day for the first
few months. The wearing time is then reduced to a few hours per day.
The benefits of Orthokeratology are:
I am very excited to bring the latest "state of the art" computerized technology to my vision care practice. This instrument, known as a Corneal Topographer, measures the shape of the cornea (front curve of the eye) by taking a very detailed picture and providing a computerized color image, which you can take home. WOW!!This helps improve my efficiency and accuracy when fitting new lenses. It has been tremendously useful for my Orthokeratology patients, because I can better predict the results and document the corneal changes as the vision improves. There will be many other uses in the future, such as helping in co-managing LASIK eye surgery. You will hear more about this technology as it becomes a standard of care. I am a current member of the Orthokeratology Section of the National
Eye Research Foundation (N.E.R.F.). This progressive organization is very
active in research and education.
